A PUL diaper cover is one of the most versatile parts of a cloth diaper layette. It does not absorb moisture itself; it provides a light waterproof layer over an insert, flat, prefold or fitted diaper. This lets you adjust absorbency to your child’s age, the time of day and the situation.

1. Absorbency is easy to customise
You can place different cloth diaper inserts inside a cover: cotton, bamboo, hemp or microfibre inserts, a flat, prefold or fitted diaper. A thinner insert is usually enough for a short walk, while a booster can provide extra absorbency for a nap or overnight use.
In an emergency, a clean, well-folded absorbent fabric may temporarily replace an insert, but for everyday use it is best to choose textiles designed for contact with a child’s skin and correctly sized for the cover. An overly bulky or uneven insert can affect the fit and cause leaks.
2. One cover can be reused
If only the insert is wet and the cover remains clean and dry, you can air it or wipe it according to the manufacturer’s guidance and use it again with a fresh insert. Alternating between two covers works particularly well.
Wash the cover after stool contamination, heavy soaking, an unpleasant smell or any skin irritation. Fewer washes save time, water and drying space, but hygiene always comes first.
3. A favourite print can stay on longer
If the mess remains on the insert or a protective liner, a clean cover can go back on with a new insert. That is good news for parents with a favourite design, such as Magic Forest.

4. Less to carry
For a walk or trip, you can pack one spare cover and several thin inserts instead of several complete pocket diapers or AIOs. Inserts take up less space, and used textiles fit easily into a small PUL wet bag. This leaves more room for spare clothes, water, a snack and a favourite toy.

5. Covers dry quickly
A cover has no sewn-in absorbent layers, so it dries much faster than a fitted diaper or AIO. This is especially convenient in a small home, during wet weather and while travelling.
Dry it according to the care label. High temperatures can shorten the life of the laminate and elastics, so it is usually best to hang the cover away from radiators and harsh sunlight.
6. Simple use and care
The insert lies directly inside the cover, so you do not need to push it into a pocket or fasten it with snaps. At changing time, remove the insert and reuse the clean cover if appropriate.
Wash covers according to the manufacturer’s instructions, at the correct temperature and with the right amount of detergent. Do not use fabric softener, boil PUL or soak a cover in strong disinfectant for many hours without a clear reason. If you notice odour, residue or leaks, first check fit, insert absorbency, detergent dosage and rinsing. Use a special cleaning procedure only if it is safe for that particular product.
A diaper cover is economical, light and easy to customise. It can form the basis of an entire cloth diaper stash or complement pockets and AIOs. What do you like most about this system?
