Breast Pads – What Are They and How to Use Them?

Breast pads are small, circular discs that are placed inside the bra. Their role is to absorb the milk that leaks from the breasts. Especially at the beginning of the breastfeeding journey, when the breasts haven’t “regulated” the amount of milk produced, leakage happens very frequently. Experienced moms can probably confirm that when it’s time for a feed, they can feel some tension in the nipples, and milk leaks from the breasts. Milk also leaks during breastfeeding – when nursing from one breast, milk leaks from the other.

Some women experience heavy leaks, while others have only small amounts of milk leaking out. I, for example, was somewhere in the middle. Milk mostly leaked when it was getting close to feeding time (often when I heard my babies crying). Fortunately, it wasn’t a large amount.

Reusable breast pads turned out to be a lifesaver for me during the breastfeeding period and were definitely better than disposable breast pads.

The outer layer of the breast pads is made from PUL fabric, while the side that touches the skin is made from bamboo or bamboo with Coolmax. Bamboo absorbs moisture, in this case, milk. At the same time, it is very pleasant to the skin and provides a sense of comfort. The shaping of the pads ensures that they don’t show under your shirt, making them invisible.

How to Use Breast Pads?

Place them in your bra with the bamboo side against your skin and the colorful side against your clothing. Change them as needed – when they become wet, or at least once a day, for hygiene and comfort.

Reusable pads wash very well. They can be washed with your clothes or diapers at 40 or 60 degrees, preferably in a mesh laundry bag or a bra wash bag to prevent them from getting lost in the washing machine.

It’s a good idea to have a few pairs of reusable breast pads on hand to always have a clean and dry pair available.

A great solution for storing wet breast pads, especially when going out, is a small PUL bag – it’s air-permeable but still waterproof. In a regular plastic bag, there is no airflow, which can cause bacteria and fungi to grow if the pads stay in there all day.
