Cloth Diapers – Where to Start? A Beginner’s Guide for Parents

Step 1: Get to Know the Different Cloth Diaper Systems
There are several types of cloth diapers available:
-
AIO (All-in-One) – everything sewn together in one piece, perfect for beginners,
-
Pocket – a diaper with a pocket to insert an absorbent insert,
-
Cover + insert – separate waterproof layer and absorbent insert,
-
Fitted + pull-ups – a very absorbent set, ideal for nighttime.
You don’t need to know everything at once. Start with 2–3 types and see what works best for your baby. Our mixed sets are also a great way to try a bit of everything!
Step 2: Choose the Right Size of Cloth Diapers
Most Pupus diapers are one size, suitable from about 4.5 kg to 15 kg. For newborns, you can choose NB (newborn)diapers, and for older children, XL.
Step 3: Get Ready to Wash Cloth Diapers
Washing cloth diapers is simple:
-
Remove the diaper and store it in a PUL wet bag or a bucket,
-
Wash every 2–3 days at 40–60°C,
-
Avoid fabric softeners and bleach,
-
Air-dry or use a tumble dryer (if the manufacturer allows it),
-
Use a cloth diaper-friendly sanitizer, such as Nappy Fresh.
Step 4: Start with a Small Stash
You don’t need a full stash right away. Start with:
-
5–7 cloth diapers,
-
10 inserts,
-
one fitted diaper or night-time solution,
-
a PUL wet bag and laundry detergent.
This lets you test the system and discover how simple cloth diapering can be!

Frequently Asked Questions About Cloth Diapers (FAQ)

Can I use cloth diapers outside the home? Absolutely! Just bring a PUL wet bag for used diapers. Many parents use cloth diapers while traveling or on walks.
Are cloth diapers suitable for nighttime? Yes – you just need a more absorbent setup, like a fitted diaper with a booster and a cover. There are also special nighttime inserts.
Are cloth diapers good for babies with sensitive skin? Yes – many cloth diapers are made from natural fabrics like bamboo or cotton, which are breathable and gentle. You can also choose polyester-free options if your baby is prone to allergies or irritation.
Are cloth diapers really more eco-friendly? Yes – although they require washing, their environmental impact is much lower than disposable diapers.
Do I need to wash cloth diapers separately? No – you can wash them with other baby clothes, as long as they’ve been rinsed and don’t contain solid waste.
Do I need to iron cloth diapers? Not at all! Modern materials don’t require ironing.
Cloth diapers are not only a great choice for your baby but also an investment in the planet’s future. Take your time, start slowly, and enjoy the process. With Pupus, it’s easier than you think!
