How to choose the right diaper cover?

A diaper cover is a reusable diaper that has a waterproof layer but is permeable to water vapor – it is said to be “breathable.” In the olden days, this function was performed by oilcloth, which did not allow air to pass through. Fortunately, those days are long gone, and oilcloths, which caused children to develop diaper rash, have been consigned to history. Now we have modern solutions for reusable diapering, such as diaper cover.
Modern diaper cover for newborns and older children
Diaper covers are made of PUL (laminated polyester), TPU, or 100% wool. What characterizes all these materials is their ability to allow water vapor to pass through. Thanks to this, covers allow the skin to breathe and do not cause diaper rash.
How to choose the right diaper cover? Who are we looking for?
Diaper covers vary in size and cut. For tiny babies weighing up to 7 kg, there are diaper covers for newborns in size “NB” - new born. These are perfect for the smallest bottoms.
For larger newborns and infants up to 10 kg, a diaper cover with M size trim is a good choice.
For larger children – infants and toddlers up to about 2 years of age – there are universal size diaper covers– one size “OS”. These swaddles are suitable for children up to about 14 kg. Among OS diaper covers, we distinguish between diaper covers with double elastic bands and diaper covers with piping.
For larger children – those weighing over 14 kg – XL diaper covers are ideal.
How to choose a good diaper cover?
Both diaper covers are made of synthetic material such as PUL and those made of natural material, i.e. wool, work very well.
- PUL - is slightly easier to maintain, as such a swaddle can simply be thrown into the washing machine and washed when dirty.
- Wool - For wool to work well, it needs to be lanolinized every 1-2 months. However, it is worth mentioning that it is not necessary to wash wool wraps every time. If there is a wet stain on a wool wrap, rinse it in water and hang it up to dry. If it is only slightly damp, simply air it out. If it is dirty, wash the dirty area using wool detergent or wash the entire wool swaddle.
Snaps or Velcro?
They can be fastened with either snaps or Velcro. Both solutions are good. However, Velcro fasteners are more consistent in fastening than snaps. However, Velcro fasteners tend to get tangled and can be undone by older children. Snaps are less consistent in fastening, but on the other hand, they are more resistant to being undone. The choice of fastener depends solely on your preferences.
Price.
Why are diaper covers with piping cheaper than those with double elastic bands? The answer is simple – they are quicker to sew, which does not mean that they are inferior.
It is also worth looking out for promotions that appear on various occasions/holidays, as you can save a lot of money :)
Fashionable, pretty, unique
Let's be honest – reusable diapers are more aesthetically pleasing than disposable ones. There's no shame in loving to look at those colorful patterns, flowers, drawings, and animals. We should also like a good diaper cover. Then every diaper change is a pleasure, not a chore. Dear moms – remember that!

To choose a good diaper cover, it is worth considering the following features:
- size;
- material;
- snap or Velcro fasteners;
