Types of reusable diapers

The reusable diaper market offers several types of diapers, differing in appearance, size, sewing method, fastenings, and also the material from which they are made. The vast range of reusable diapers on offer can be overwhelming, but it is really possible to find your way through this reusable jungle. Contrary to appearances, you will quickly become proficient and knowledgeable about reusable diapers.
Reusable diapers and their types
- Types of reusable diapers: Wool and PUL
Reusable diapers are made of natural materials, such as wool, or synthetic materials, most often laminated polyester (PUL for short). Properly maintained wool, i.e., properly aired, washed, and lanolinized, can be used as a diaper. Its downside is its high price. A diaper made of PUL fabric will be cheaper and slightly easier to maintain. It only needs to be washed properly, without the need for lanolin treatment. - Types of reusable diapers: NB, OS, XL
Reusable diapers, just like clothes, come in different sizes. The smallest diapers are those designed for newborns, sized “newborn” or “NB” for short. A universal diaper that will last for most of the diapering period is a size OS (one-size) diaper. The largest diaper is the XL size. It is worth noting that diapers can be adjusted in length and width thanks to a nap system sewn into them, which allows you to freely reduce or increase the size of the diaper, within the range of its size, of course. - Types of reusable diapers: wraps and pockets
Reusable diapers are divided into several main types depending on how many layers they are made of and whether they have dedicated attachable or sewn-in inserts. For this reason, we distinguish between the following types of diapers: Wraps
Pockets
SIO (snap in one);
AIO (all-in-one).
Wraps are made only of a waterproof layer (they can be sewn from PUL, wool, or minky fabric). For the wrap to work, an absorbent insert must be placed inside it. Some wraps have flaps into which the absorbent insert can be inserted.
In addition to the waterproof layer, the pocket also has a pocket in which the absorbent insert is placed. On the side facing the child's skin, the pockets are usually lined with microfleece.
SIO diapers are wraps with snaps sewn on the inside to attach the absorbent insert. This prevents the absorbent insert from shifting.
AIO – a pocket-type diaper with an absorbent insert sewn into the inside.
- Types of reusable diapers: snap fasteners and Velcro
Reusable diapers can be fastened at the waist with snap fasteners (a type of round snap) or Velcro. Each solution has its pros and cons. Snaps take a little longer to fasten, but they are virtually impossible for an older child to undo. Velcro fastenings are quicker to fasten, but once a child can use their hands, they can undo them. In addition, Velcro fastenings must be properly secured during washing so that they do not get damaged and do not damage other items being washed. - Types of reusable diapers: for girls, for boys, unisex
And the last division we want to mention is based on aesthetics. We can find diapers with more boyish and more girlish designs, as well as unisex ones. Which one we choose depends on our preferences and personal tastes.
